Having not visited a French campsite since I was a child we were unsure as to what to expect from our stay at at Le Clarys Plage, but I’m pleased to say that we had a fantastic experience at this great family friendly campsite in the Vendée region of France. Le Clarys Plage is a large campsite in the Vendée, close to the seaside resort of St Jean de Monts and only 400 metres from the beach. Various travel companies have mobile homes to rent on the site and there are also pitches for tents and campervans.
Our Eurocamp Mobile Home at Le Clarys Plage
Our mobile home had 2 bedrooms (one with a double bed and one with bunk beds) a shower, toilet, sitting/dining area (with a pull-out bed if required), kitchen, outdoor raised decking area and a barbecue. It was kitted out with everything we needed and was a perfect base to explore the campsite and the surrounding area. Duvets and pillows were provided and we paid extra for bed linen, although you could bring your own.
Facilities at Le Clarys Plage
The main attraction at Le Clarys Plage is its fabulous water park which the children absolutely loved! The pool complex is made up of an outdoor pool, a heated indoor pool, a jacuzzi, a lazy river, water jet play areas and lots of different water slides. There are also shallower areas for younger children to enjoy and lots of sunloungers to relax on.
There are two play areas at Le Clarys Plage. The main one is just a short distance from the pool complex and has great modern play equipment to keep the kids entertained.
Bar, Cafe & Take-Away
Although we didn’t spend much time in the bar/cafe area it looked very pleasant and modern. There was evening entertainment on offer and a well-equipped games room too. There was also a fabulous ice-cream bar with lots of delicious flavours to try!
All of the public areas at Le Clarys Plage were very well-maintained and sparkling clean. The pool complex felt very safe and there were plenty of lifeguards on duty. There are washing machines and dryers on site and wifi is available for an extra charge.
The site has a multisport complex with football pitch, tennis court, sports facilities, table tennis, mini-golf and more, and you can hire bikes to explore the local cycle paths. There is also a horse-riding centre a 2 minute walk from the site. Although we didn’t take advantage of the Kids’ Club it looked like the children were having great fun and were well looked after.
There is a large supermarket which is a 5 minute walk away from the park and there are also some local restaurants within walking distance too.
Places to Visit Near Le Clarys Plage
Le Clarys Plage is a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Highlights for us were Apremont, Saint-Hilaire-De-Riez and Saint-Gilles Croix-de-Ville.
The beautiful village of Apremont is home to the remains of the renaissance Chateau d’Apremont; the Salle Panoramique, a water tower with a lift, taking you 80 metres high to a viewing gallery with panoramic views; and Lac d’Apremont, the Vendée’s largest lake where we spent a lovely day relaxing on the lakeside beach and having fun in the water, swimming and enjoying the various water-sports on offer.
In Saint-Hilaire-De-Riez we spent time on one of the gorgeous beaches and also visited the Grosse Terre lighthouse, which has stunning views, and the beautiful gardens of La Villa de Grosse Terre which was originally a military outpost.
We also visited Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Ville a couple of times and played on the large beach, visited the harbour and explored the meandering streets of the town.
Puy du Fou
Le Clarys Plage is also only a 90 minute drive from the amazing historical theme park, Puy du Fou which we can highly recommend. You can read our Puy du Fou review here.
How to get to Le Clarys Plage
We travelled on the ferry from Poole to Cherbourg which took about 4.5 hours. We then drove to Le Clarys Plage which again took about 4.5 hours. Saint Malo ferry port is closer (just under 3 hours drive) and Caen ferry port is just under 4 hours away by car. The nearest airport is Nantes which is an hour’s drive from the park.
We really enjoyed our first Eurocamp experience which was all paid for by ourselves. We are really excited to be working with “Best Child Friendly Holidays” and Eurocamp in May 2020 as part of a gifted collaboration. We will be visiting La Croix de Vieux Pont Campsite near Paris which looks amazing – we can’t wait!
